THE MISSING STEAMER PERTHSHIRE.
[per press association. Wellington, June 16. H Captain Richardson, of the Waikara, reports that he interviewed the Captain of the .Northern Chief in Sydney and having got all the information he could, sailed close under Lord Howe Island, thence due east and afterwards soutli to latitude 38 4 and longitude 164, where a heavy N E gale put an end to the search. (For continuation see page 4 )
A dangerous sea was running and the ressel needed all attention herself. This lasted till land was sighted. Whatever may have been the Perthshire's position on kha 9th the Captain thinks that if she has undergone a similar experience to that of the Waikare she has drifted fully 200 miles S E to W, and he believes the gale is still raging. At one time the Waikare had to put her head to the sea and slow the engines down. Captain Edwin believes the Perthshire has drifted to the west, and is now probably 300 miles westward of the point where she was last seen, and making in the direction of Lord Howe Island. He bases his belief on the study of the winds prevailing lately. Under ordinary conditions he thinks she would have gone in the direction of the Kerinadecs.
