How Lieut. Freeman was killed.

Soon after the retreat was sounded Lieut. Freeman, leader of the expedition, was shot through the heart. He was just decending the slope with the idea of collecting stragglers. Two more steps would have placed him out of the line of fire. The sailors tried to carry him, but he was a big heavy man, and the country rough. The firing from the rebels was hot } they were up cocoanut trees, and some were shot there. They were also behind cocoanut trees, and bullets from English and American rifles went slap through the trees and rebels too. Lieut. Lonsdale, Ensign Monaghan, ! and a few British and a American sailors were together when the former was shot through the leg. Ensign Monaghan and two American sailors tried to assist their officer. One of the sailors, however, was shot, and Lieut. Lonsdale bade the other retreat and join his comrades, and the man did so. Then a. blue-jacket from H.MS. Porpoise, named Hurse, came up and heard Lieut. Londale urge Ensign 'Monaghan to leave him. " Leave me alone," he said " I'm done." But Ensign Monaghan stuck bravely to the wounded man. A shot -struck Lieut. LoDsdale through, the heart and he fell. Ensign Monaghan, who stuck to his comrade to the death, moved a few steps away, when he, too, was shot through the heart, and met the fate of , a brave man. I
