TOTARA FLAT BUTTER FACTORY.

«. (TotheEditor.) Sir, — As a shareholder of the Butter Factory at Totara Flat, it seems to me that there is some misunderstanding as to whether Mr Cowie was engaged by Mr Sawers as manager of the factory or butter maker only. I always understood that Mr Cowie was manager. As I was introduced to Mr Cowie as manager by a director, there is no doubt that Mr Cowie waß the only man that was thef Company's manager and that shareholders knew of. It is simply getting behind the truth to say that he was butter maker only. What seems very strange to me and other shareholders is that Mr Cowie should have contracted large debts without the sanction of either chairman or directors. I presume that Mr Oowie has had a free band or be would not have acted as he has done to the great loss of the Company.— l am, <fee, Shareholder. Grey Valley.

The police are gradually adding to the charges against ex-convict James Butler, alias Wilson, who lately came from New Zealand. He has already been] sentenced on two. On Saturday he was committed for trial for attempting to commie a burglary at the house of Mr. E. J. Power, of Richmond. The whole of the original money — L233, ooo— which was specially appropriated by the Government of Victoria in 1889-90 to promote the dairy, fruit, and wine industries has been apportioned. The only bonus at the present time being paid is that on the export of green fruit. In the Cairns (Q) district 750 head of cattle belonging to one man hare succumbed to the £ick plague.
