CANTERBURY UNEMPLOYED,

(PER PBBSS ASSOCIATION.) Chrisxchubch, July 13. The first meeting of the unemployed relief committee appointed at a public meeting last week was held to-.day. It was resolved to ask a number of the bodiei to be represented on the committee to appeal to the newspapers to advjeate the cause and to reoslve^ubsor'ptions and to ask for subscriptions from the Premier and the city and suburban members of Parliament for Canterbury. The Mayor stated that he intended leading the list with L 5 53. During the discussion the Mayor intimated that he had not much sympathy with the means proposed. He felt that this tinkering with the question year after year was doin£ no good and was bringing the solution of the unemployed question no nearer. He did not agree with the necessity for the present movement, as ha had been to the Charitable Aid Board, and had been in formed that that body was prepared to deal with any necessary cases. So long as the citizens would look after the unemployed the Government would do nothing In tho matter.
