Coghlan, the Government statist, estimates that the population of New South Wales at the end of the year will be 1,165,000. ..There has been an increase of 33,000 sinoe the census was taken. He estimates that the population of Vicfcorta willba 1,157,000. (Received March 5, at 11 20 am.) Melbourne, March 5. The Mercantile Bank cf Australia has suspended payment, owing to the continoed withdrawal of deposits. The whole of the securities are intact. Perth, March 5. The dronght in the northern districts haa broken up, and the country la flooded for miles around. . Two new lodes of surprising richness' have been discovered at the Murchiaon goldfields.
An employer of German cleaks says that they work 20 per cent, slower than English ones. As a general rule clouds are about' a mile above the surface of the earth. Trout, weighing up to seven pounds have been caught in the Manawatu river. (See fourth page.)
