STOCK EXCHANGE REPORT.

I (by telegraph.) , Reefton, February 6. The battery amalgam returns to hand give a total of 1098 ounces from the top plates, the contributing companies being the Globe, Progress, No 2 Dark, Cumberland, and Keep-it-Dark and Inleerman. The first named is rather under the average, while the others are all very satis(iSfee fourth page.)

factory. The share market hna not been over active, but whatever may be the cause of such a condition it cannot be said that the general outlook here in quartz mining matters at the present time is not a most healthy and reassuring one, and the ; actual returns now being obtained are ancb as ought to warrant more liberal investment, especially from outside, where capital does exist. Early in the week Big Rivers were in fair demand and Bold at up to 7s 3d, but receding later on, when the enquiry was over for the time. Operations at the time are aB usual. Cumberland show an advance, having been 'sold at 3a 6d, and shares hard to get. The crushing now going on promises a good result, and the property Jb steadily developing a more permanent character. Fiery Cross have been also dealt in at up to 53 6d, and have had a good a turn of business aB any other ntock. Golden Treasure had a little buaineßß at low rates and sold at prices varying up to la Bd. Golden Lead got a little e&sier, and sellers ask between 2s 6d and 2* 9d for these shares. No 2 Keep-it-Dark keep the firm place which the crushing now going on and the appearance of the mine certainly warrant. Sales at 6s 3d and 6s 4d, and shares only offering in small parcels. The Progress is to hand with another good weekly return, but transactions in the stock are limited. Operations in the Scotia mine are at present In country of a rather more promising character, and some business in these j shares was done up to Is lOd. No crushIng at the Wealth battery was done this week, and some shares sold at from 4s 6d to ss. In the mine stone is com'ng to hand from stopes over the battpcy level and in the extension above. The contractors are making fair prrgresH. In the Sir Charles Russell, Painkiller district, the raef is now of a good bulk and thickness, and considering the two test crushings at the Keep-it-Dark battery proved the atone highly payable, it is only to be expected, as is the ease, that enquiry for shares has increased, and the proprietary becomes substantial and representative. At the Hercules mine stone preparatory to a crushing is still coming to grass. Globes keep foremost among the highest priced lines, and are so firmly held as tojlinrt busies;. The sinking of thareif in the lower working, which may soon b» looked for, may alter this condition and bring buyers and holders together. Crushing with ten heads at the Dark battery is going on, and buyers are offering 10a for the shares. Today the demand is very limited. In the Inkerman mine the winze is still going down on stone, the sinking of the main shaft is going on, and Btone is coming to grass from the son' h lease. A new find of stone towards the north boundary is reported ; thicknesa two feet and gold ehowing pretty freely. The following are the midday quotations : — Buyers — Btg River, 63 4d ; Cumberland. 3s 63 ; Fiory Cross, 5s Gi ; Globe, 22s 6d ; Wealth of Nations, 4s 6d ; Dark. 10s.
