THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, MAY 3, 1890. DEATH OF MR JAMES BARKLEY.
« The very sudden death of Mr Jas. Barkley on Friday morning was a great blow to his friends, inasmuch as it was altogether unexpected. There was no reason to suspect any calamity of the kind. Deceased was invariab-y most healthy. It was very seldom indeed that the services of a doctor were called into his house ; and as far as Mr Barkley himse'f was concerned daring his residence on the West Coast only once was it deemed necessary to call in the services of a medical man. As a public man Mr Barkley's death will be a great lost to the town. Besides filling the office of Mayor several times he bestowed great attention on the dutiee of councillor, and it is not too much to Bay that he had mastered the Intricacies of the Municipal Corporations Act to an extept that no other councillor had done before him, and rarely or never urged a point in which h's contention was not upheld. Mr Barkley arrived here about Christmas time of 1866, in company with Mr J. S. Thompson, his cousin, representing Messrs Patterson, Ray and Palmer, wholesale warehousemen, Melbourne. Mr Thompson was sent down here to wind up an estate, and seeing an opening for business he went back to Melbourne and arranged with Mr Batkley to go into patnership. Soon after Mr Berkley came on to the Grey and got a shop ready while Mr Thomson remained in Melbourne to select s st»o*c of giodf? suitable for the market. Messrs Thompson and Barkley carried on business until 1868, when they purchased the business, and took Mr W. S. Smith into partnership under the name of Thompson, Smith and Barkley. This partnership lasted until July, 1877, when Mr Thompson retired, and the partnership consisted of Messrs Smith and Barkley, who mraained in partnership until 1878-79, when Mr Smith withdrew, and his place was taken by h's brother, Mr G. S. Smith. The latter continued in the business until 1882, whenlMr Barkley took full control. Mr Barkley was born in Ballyboy, Ireland, on Fehruary 24, 1837, and was consequently 53 years of age. He was a widower, and had married again, and leaves a widow and four daughters, one by his second wife. Accord Id gto the family doctor death was the result of fatty degeneration of the heart. Deceased was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, and took a great interest in church matters. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon;' ■'-
