INSTALLATION OF ARCHDEACON JULIUS.
+ (pee press association.) Chbistchusch, May 1. When the newly consecrated Bishop left the Cathedral he was heartily cheered by the crowd assembled in front of the building. In the afternoon Bishop Julius held a reception at the Bishop's court, and was introduced ta the clergy of the diocese, members of the Synod, and others. In the evening the installation service took place before another large congregation, all the Bishops and clergy being present. The Chancellor of the Diocnse read the proclamation of Bishop Jullub'b appointment to the See of Chrlstchnrch. The newly appointed Bishop made a declaration of his intention to abide by the oonstitntion and the canons of the general Synod of the church of the province of New Zealand and statutes, rules, and regulations of the Diocesan Synod, and promised to faithfally serve as Bishop of churches of this diocese. Afterwards, the Dean presented him with a pastoral staff. A Bpecial anthem was sung, the words of which were collected and ar-
ranged by the Rev. Dunkley and the music composed by Mr Tinda 1 !, the oathedral organist. Bishop Julius preached an an eloquent sermon, taking as his text First Timothy iv chapter 10th verse— '* For to this end" we labor and strive beoaase we have our hope set on the living God." He emphasised the fact that the hope of the Israelites was in a living God, whom they believed was ever present with them. This hope of a living God had through all ages made the church strong and sustained her workers and martyrs. He referred — to the work of Bishops Selwyn and Pattison and Father Damien. No formulas of a dead past would serve our purpose to-day, but only the hope of a living God. He appealed to the clergy and laity to help him in his work as Bishop. He spoke reverently of Bishop Harper, whose plaoe he felt unworthy to fill ; yet he did not fear for he himself hoped in the living God. The Sermon produced a great impression.
