* [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received May 1, 1 25 a m.) Sydney, May 1. Experiments with Pasteur's -microbes ara now being carried out. A number of rabbits which had been inoculated with the microbes on Saturday were found alive ab"d healthy on Monday! "TEe experiment 13 not regarded as conclusive, as some of the microbes may notretain their virulence. The agent of M. Pasteur will probably cultivate fresh microbes. ■ Adelaide, May 1. A fatal tram accident occurred yesterday. A buggy containing Mr Hamblyn,
his wife, and a man, was crossing the line, when^it was dashed into by ope of the cars. HaiWbJlyn was killed outright, and his wife so severely injured that she is not expeoted to recover. The third occupant of the buggy was also seriously injured. Melbourne, May 2. Edwards, the theatrical agent, yesterday attempted to murder a man whom he alleged was on two familiartermß with his Wife. Edwards drew a revolver and fired ..twice without. effect. — — —. - - Brisbane,. May 1. A difficulty has arwen over the sculling race arranged between Trickett and Hanlan, to be rowed on Fitzroy river. The final deposit of Hanlan wa3 not. paid on the due date, and Trickett claim's that he has forfeited all previous deposits. Hanlan objects to Trickett receiving the amount. The balance of the stake was posted in time to reach Queensland when due, and must have been delayed in transmission. Trickett persists ia his demand for the money. (Received May 2, at 110 pm.) Government have called fresh tenders for the construction of 50 locomotives in .theufiQlony- • .......... •-,..».-.. ■.••■,-■. * The rabbit commissioners have communicated with the New Zealand Government requesting that a report on -the alleged epidemic of fowl cholera near Canterbury be forwarded to them, and also to send a small quantity of the blood of the diseased fowls in vaccam tubes. Adelaide, May 2. Doctor Reilly was consecrated to the See of Port Augusta. The ceremony was conducted by Cardinal Moran. Fathers Chastagnon, and Kirk of New Zealand . were present. At an influential public meeting it was resolved to ask the Government to introduce a bill imposing a Chinese poll tax of L2OO and a residential tax of L2O. The meeting strongly protested against relegating to the Imperial Government the right to legislate on the Chinese question, which was a matter purely for the colonies to consider.
