THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1887.

Late telegrams stste that in consequence of heavy rains floods had risen in various parts of tha North Island, doing more or less damage.

We would draw a'tention to the grand soiree in the Wesleyan Church to-night. We are able to say that the ladies have provided a plentiful supply of good things in the shape of food for the physical man ; while tho entertainment for the mind will prove a great treat. The object for which the soiree is being held commends itself to all, \'z. — Painting the Church and Parsonage. There ought to be a very full house to support so good an object.

A meeting of the Ahaura Jockey Club was b^d at Murphy's Hotel, Ahiura, on Monday, October 10th. Mr Kennedy occupied the chair in the absence of the president, Mr Marshall. The business before tho meeting being principally the drafting of a programme for the summer race meeting was immediately proceeded tfith. A considerable diversity of opinion was expressed amongst those present on the matter. Ultimately one was drafted and ordered to be again brought up for consideration at a mee'ing of the club to be held on the 24th 'nsr. The amount of the stakes in the programme, as it at pre^nfc ex'sts, is £220. The matter of charging only 5 per cent for nominations and acceptances created considerable discussion. It was, however, finally ordered to be inserted in the programme, subject to the approval of the next meeting.

At tho official declaration of the poll for the election of a member for Hokitika district, Mr Bevan delivered a scathing speech, sharply attacking the members and the employees of the Westland County Council, who were united in opposing him.

Tho hon. treasurer of the Grey River Hospital Trustees' Board begs to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of £16 from the Red Jack's Locai Committee, per Mr S. Frankpitt.

The installation of officers of the Westland Kilwinning Royal Arch Chapter 147, S. C , took place last evening (says the West Cocist_ Times of the 11th mat), when the following Companions were installed :— Comp. R. W. Wade, as M E Z ; Comp. H. S. Andrewes, as M H ; > Comp. J. J. Breeze, as ME J ; Comp. i W. A. Andrews, asSK; Cnmp. Lindei man, PZ, as SE; Conp. Sammons, as P S ; Comp. Evans, as Assistant S ; Comp. Peake, as Janitor, The ceremony > was performed throughont by P Z's. Lindemann and Michael, and gave general satisfaction. The Companions separated after partaking of some refreshment at host Lynch's Mj T. H. Garth, tobacconist, of Boundary street, has fitted up a very nice hairdressing and shaving saloon on his premises, which is presided over by a competent artist. In consequence of the s s Koranui being detained the Bellringerß' Entertainment is postponed till Thursday. At the recent election, eight candidates had the misfortune to forfait their deposit of £10, not having polled ten per cent of the number of votes recorded by their successful opponents. A second cargo of coal for Hongkong left Wellington by the steamer Whampoa^ which sailed on the 30th September, following one dispatched by the Woosung on the 10th August. The two cargops mentioned above were shipped to order of a China firm, and it is very likely that further orders will follow as the result of this experimtnt. It is hinted in well-informed circles," says the New Zealand Times, that when Parliament meets there will be some peculiar disclosures in connection, wi'h the administration of two or three departments of the public service, one of which is that of Defence. Very direc" charges are likely to be made, and it is just possible that there will be some startling scenes in connection with them." Mr Gosson, pianoforte tuner, has arrived and will remain hare for a short period. The Scotch distillers have produced moro whiskey than the Scotch can consume. Four whiskey firms are insolvent, and forty mi'Unns of whiskey are bonded in Scotlaii'l. These facts should tend to reduce the price of the spirit. The display of mantles and costumes at Christopher Smith's this season is really wonderful. Ladies should remember thane is a direct importer from the manu fncturers.— [\dvt]. Headaches, Lowness of Soirits, &c, show thai the Liver is out of o der — In Wolfe's Schnapps you have the best remedy. It is astonishing the favor in which Wolfe's Schnapps is held— We suppose because* it 13 a first class article. \ We know that Wolfe's Schnapps is a first class article, andean recommend it as such to our readers. NO MORE HARD TIMES. If you will stop spending so much on fine clothes, rich food and style, buy good, healthy food, cheaper and better clothing; get more real and substantial things of life every way, and especially stop the foolish habit of employing expensive quack doctors or using so much of the vile humbug medicine thatdofts you only harm, but put your trust in that simple, pure remedy, Dr Soule's American Hop Bitters ; that cures always at a trifling cost, and you will see good times and have good health- "f!fcvnnic!e»" c
