October 10.
At the Resident Magistrate's court held here this morning before Major Keddell, Esq., R.M., Sarah Jones summoned her husband, Henry Jones, to show cause why ho should not support her. After hearing a deal of evidence from plantiff and defendant, the magistrate refused to make any order. Complaint dismissed. Mr Cresswell appeared for defendant. Mrs Jones was not represented by counsel. Carl Yortt, charged with unlawfully assaulting James Blocksage, aged four years, pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate said he was satisfied with the defendant's statement that he did not hurt the child, and only meant io frighten him. He would inflict the fine of Is and costs, 7s. From the evidence it appears that the child had been throwing stones, and had lamed Yortt's chicken, whereupon defendant picked up a twig and struck him very lightly, passing him over the fence to his mother, and telling her she deserved a good thrashing for not having more control over him. Hence the proce? dings. The secretary of the Brunner Athletic Sports has received a letter stating that one guinea will b:> paid towards the Christmas sports on condition th<t in the big handicap six competitors start, they being the bona fide owners of a Waterbury watch, wearing it at the t'me of the race. The Railway Department are making preparations for the erection of semaphores at Wallsend and Tyneside.
