THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

[ttnitbd press association.]

Weimnoton, October 7.

At the meeting of tho Opposicton ; members this afternoon 47 were present ' and nine said to be accounted for. Several of those present yesterday refused to attend to-day. Fulton occupied the chair i on both occasions. There was a long discussion, lasting till just on 6 p m, and. views were freely expressed and can vas3ed. No formal resolution poaed, and little more was d clearing the ground somewhat Another meeting is to be 2 o'clock to-morrow, when it ally expected that definite step will be taken, and the question of who is to form a Ministry or whether any attempt shall be made to do so at present is finally settled. Everything points t> Major Atkinson being the ultimate choice as leader. Some are in favor of leaving it to Grey to take the lead, but It is understood he is disinclined to do so. Another proposition is that Atkinson shall be Premier but not Treasurer. It is stated that he is practically secure of the necessary support if he decides to undertake the task, and it is generally believed that the portfolios will be virtually alloted by Monday. The Southland members, six in number, held a meeting to-day, at which it was unanimously decided to offer no factious opposition to a new Ministry until they have time to lay their policy before the House. A meeting of some of the new members adverse to the late Ministry was also held at which a similar decision was arrived afc. In fact caucuses have been the order of the day. A curious point has been raised relative to the order of proceedings on Tuesday. The Commissioners announced that the Governor woald state his reason for calling Parliament together at 2 t> m ; but the House, on rising, adjourned till 7 30 on Tuesday. As the House will not ba sitting on. Tuesday afternoon, it is argued that they cannot be called upon to listen to Hia Excellency.
