One or .two of the vessels had a narrow escape, the fog only lifting when the steamers were close on the rocks. Though there was a brilliant sunshine in town all day, the fog was thick at Island Bay and at the Heads, and the steamer Botomahana, which left for the south this afternoon, had to anchor under the pilot station for a couple of hours. Whiteman's sawmill at Waikanae was destroyed by fire on Friday last. The building and machinery were insured for £500. Nothing was saved. The origin is j unknown. A visitor returned from Rotorua states that seed potatoes left in before the eruption are springing up vigorously from the overlying mud, though som9 deep digging will be required to gather the crops. The forest trees are beginning to bud again vigorously, and he thinks there is not so much damage as was at first believed. The country, however, still wears a general aspect of desolation. January 25, The comet was visible at Karorl, near here, last night. The Alameda left San Francisco for Auckland and Sydney on the 16th January, one day la'e. Inglis under the Rabbit Act, for neglecting to destroy rabbits, wai dismissed on the ground that the evidence for the prosecution did not sustain the charge, the evidence for the defence proving he had done all that was possible. M'Lean, for the River Board, succeeded in capsizing thre6 informations against the board under the Rabbit Act, and finally In a fourth raised the novel point that the board could not devote any of its funds to the destruction of rabbits, as the disposal of the funds was governed by Act. Judgment reserved, though the bench thought the point raised was fatal.
