AN OVERDUE VESSEL.
, The Charles Smith, in command of Captain Goodman, was reported all well at the Chathams on May 27, and was expected to leave for Lyttelton a month later. The run from the Chathams to Lyttelton occupies a week under favorable circumstances, and. a fortnight is an exceptionally long run, so that the vessel is more than a fortnight overdue, and there is a feeling here that something should be done to ascertain her whereabouts. She may have gone ashore at the Chatams and remained there hard and fast, thus cutting off all communication with the Islanders and New Zealand.
