Amendment lost hj 5 to 2, and the Chairman s resolution carried. The Chairman then moved that the solicitor's salary be £100 for the ensuing year. Letter from H. W. Kitchingham. in respect to various items of Council business. Consideration of some of the business was referred to the Finance Committee. The Council adjourned at 11.35 p.m. till 10.30 next morning. Wednesday, Juxy 21. The Council resumed at 10. 30 this morning. Present— Crs Ryall, Marshall, Foley, Parfitt, and Clifford. The Council resolved itself into Com- i mittee of Finance, which oocupled them until the mid-day adjournment. On resuming at 2 p.m. the Council continued in Committee of Finance, during which all the accounts against the Council since its last meeting were considered and passed for payment. The report of the Finance Committee was then read and adopted. The Council then proceeded with the consideration of an application from Timothy Mullins for a refund of £103 4s, deducted by the Overseer for work alleged to have been left undon*.— The Overseer explained the facts of the case from his point of view. — Consideration deferred till a later period of the Bitting, so as to enable Mr Mullins to be present. Latter from Henry M'Gill to Cr Taylor regarding a track at Moonlight. — Referred to Road Overseer to report. The Road Overseer's report was read. It dealt with a variety of county works. Coal Creek Flat Protection.— -Unable to get the promise of any monetary assistance from the residents of the Flat. He thought £100 spent on scrub and wire rope would be productive of good results. — Cr Ryall said if something was not done the bank would be eaten away to the main road. He moved that the Council do the work provided the settlers contribute one-thir of the cost. The Council should do something to protect their own property. — Cr Clifford said that as it was a new work it could not be entertained. Not seconded. Galway's claim on land at Ward's Gully.— The Overseer considered Mr Galway's demands excessive, and he recommended that his offer be refused and he be allowed to take proceedings. — Cr Foley moved that the action be defended by the Council's solicitor. — Cr Marshall seconded. He really saw no other course open to the Council. — Cr Parfitt moved that an assessor be appointed to assess the damage inflicted, and the value of the land to be taken for cutting a channel. — Not seconded. — Resolution ca.ried. The Council dropped the Boad Overseer's report to consider an application by Mr Ross for a piece of land promised him by the late Mr Butler for shifting a gorse fence at the request of Mr Butler on behalf of the Council. He did not want th« land, but he wanted the Council to prevent anyone else from coming on this piece of ground (which is on the road < reserve) and shutting him out. — Resolved, '< on the motion of Cr Foley, seconded by . Cr Marshall, that no one be allowed to build on the road reserve to the inconvenience of Mr Ross. | Teremakau Settlement Track. — The \ report stated the probable coat of making ( a track to enable the settlers to get in and out. — Cr Foley strongly supported the making of the track by the Council. The settlers had a quantity of produce that they could not bring out to market. According to MrMaloney's statement if the track was repaired and a drain cut he would give a guarantee that he would claim no further compensation from the Council. — After some further discussion, it was resolved that the work should be done conditional on the execution of Mr Maloney's guarantee, and the vote of £500 promised by the Government. Brown's Terrace Track, Maori Creek. — No action to be taken. Track alongside lagoon on north side of river. — Cr Parfitt moved that as the work is a new one it cannot be entertained. Not seconded. — Cr Ryall moved that the Overseer be authorised to cut a rough bush track from Cobden to the beach so as to enable people to get along the track, at a cost net exceeding £s.— Carried. M'Millan's claim for compensation for land at Razorback. — Matter to be considered when the laud is surveyed. Track between Nobles and Granville. — It would cost £30 to) make the track required. — Cr Marshall moved that the parties be written to and asked if they would undertake to keep the track open. Not seconded. — The Chairman moved that the Overseer notify Hill and Swords that they will be held responsible for any damage to track. — Cr Ryall seconded. — Carried. Repairs to Seven Mile road. — The repairs effected had been done without any authority from the Council by R Armstrong, though required. — Application for payment not entertained. Footbridge across Moonlight Creek. — The report stated that the bridge was beyond repair and a new bridge would cost £50. — Cr Marshall moved that a new bridge be erected. — Cr Clifford opposed on the ground that the work was a new ] one and could not be entertained without j rescinding a former resolution regarding 1 new works. — Cr Marshall then moved that leave be grantod to rescind that resolution in orcl<?.r to enable the erection of a bridge across Moonlight Creek to be dealt with. — Cr Clifford seconded. — It was then resolved that the bridge either be replaced or another structure erected, as might be deemed expedient.
