In the Legislative Council, Bathgate presented a petition from » members of the Baptist Union of the colony, praying that more stringent measures should be framed for the better protection of girls and young women. Chamberlain moved a motion to the effect that every encouragement should be given to manufacturers by the imposition of protective duties. Bathgate at considerable length supported the'motion. Stevens moved the previous question, which was carried, the voting being— -ayes, 12 '; noes, 23. The motion, was therefore j lost. The Wyndham Show Grounds Reserves Bill was read a second time. The East and West Coast Railway Construction Bill was read a second time on a division — ayes, 25 ; noes, 3. The. Council adjourned at 5 p.m. The Council in the evening dealt with a large number of bills, the principal of which were the Harbors Act Amendment, Friendly Societies' Amendment, .and the Local Bodies Loans Bill. There was considerable discussion on clause 19 of the lalter, allowing the first year's interest to be paid out of loan, but eventually it was retained by 14 to 11. The Council adjourned at 10.30 p.m.
