THE WAIPUNA RIDING. [TO THE EDITOR].

| Sir, — I would draw the attention of the ! public to the fact that the Grey County Council does not seem to take much interest in this riding. It is very seldom that the road overseer pays us a visit. Two bridges have been made at Nobles, but they are not yet tarred. It is time it was done, before the wet weather sets in. The foot-bridges on the Granville road are in a dangerous condition, many of the caps and planks being rotten, and thoroughly unsafe for walking on ; especially the one nearest Totara Flat, which has been patched up over and over again, 1 till it will stand patching no longer. The Council must either put up a new bridge or pull the old one down and do away with it altogether. If a new bridge were to be put up, it would need to be the length of the other when it was built, as part of the old bridge was pulled down, being unsafe, and a path made instead. When a flood comes it flows over the footpath, and any person walking cannot get over dryfooted. A large tree has fallen across Duffers Creek foot track, proving a great obstruction to travellers. It has not yet ].aen cleared off. If the council would put the Granville roads and bridges up for contract for maintenance for a certain time, it would be far better than the patchwork that has been going on ; for if a tree falls across the road, or plank breaks in a culvert, a man goes and repairs it, and gets a full day's wage whether he works or not. as the Oversrer is never up to see how things are going on. In conclusion, I hope the Council will open their eyes to th ese facts, and keep the roads and bridges in better order for the future, in the same way as other places are looked after down country. — I am., &c, Fair Play for the District. March Bth, 1886.
