OTAGO RUNHOLDERS.

Dunedin, February 22.

A deputation representing the runholders waited on Ballance, Minister of Lands,"to-day, to ask for a reduction of rents on pastoral runs. They urged that when the leases were sold the price of wool was 35 per cent higher, and stock was at better prices. The Minister pointed out that the question was a serious one, as if granted it meant an addition to the property tax. If Government made a concession to one class of tenants they must do the same to others. If rents were reduced, there must be an inquuy in each case. The Hon. Campbell said that if the present rents were continued, runholders must throw up their runs and Government would then have to take tenants at reduced rents. The Minister said that the matter must be dealt with by Parliament ; he would bring the matter before the Cabinet.
