RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Tuesday, February 9th. (Before Major Keddell, R.M.) An assault case between two boys, one a very small one, was heard. It arose out of a slanging match, after which one hit the other on the forehead with a stone. The offender was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs for taking the law into his own hands. Jno. and Jas. Maher were charged with being drunk and disorderly at Brunnerton. Case dismissed on the ground of insufficient evidence. P. G. Leslie was charged with keeping his licensed premises open during prohibited hours for the sale of liquor. Mr Hannan appeared for the defence. The court ruled that there was no evidence to warrant the charge. „ T. Fisher v. R. Lynch.— Claim, 7a 6d. Judgment for plaintiff for £4 12s;' costs £1 16. J. A. Houguez v. W. Dewson.— Claim, £2 7s 6d. Judgment for amount claimed ; coats £1 10s. Same v. D. Girdwood.— Claim Bs, alleged value of a teapot sold at auction at Brunner by defendant on plaintiffs account. Case adjourned to 16th inst. for the production of the evidence of one Martin, who failed to appear in obedience to a summons duly served, plaintiff taking an affidavit to that affect. The Magistrate said that if plaintiffs statement was correct and witness could not give good explanation for his refusal he made himself liable to a fine or imprisonment.
