UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
Dunedin, February 3. At a meeting of the University Council Dr Salmond's appointment to the chair of Moral and Mental Philosophy came up. Stout, Minister of Education, wrote sug--1 gesting that the Council, Synod, and Church Board should unite to secure legislation to alter the present system of appointment. He also suggested the founding of a chair of methodology and granting degrees in pedagogies A motion was submitted that the Council decline to proceed further in the matter of Dr Salmond's election. There was also proposed a series of amendments to the effect that the Council cannot assent to the appointment until satisfied that the person appointed is under their control, and that a sub-committee be appointed. After discussion the matter was referred to a committee, the general opinion being in favor of the amendment that pending legislation the Council should defer committing themselves as to Dr Salmond's appointment. A motion was carried that" in future the tenure of all professors appointed should be for five years.
