COOK STRAIT CABLE,

A portion of the original Cook Strait cable, where the break occurred, has been cut out and brought to Wellington. Only in a few feet does the cable show any sign of deterioriation, although it has been sub merged some 18 and a-half years. The portion actually broken through appears to have been resting on a sharp edge of a rock, and so has b°en subjected to chemical action, probably that of copper, which has corroded and eaten through the iron and other materials forming the cable. Tn repairing the break the steamer was able to aave several fathoms of cable by taking in some of the slack which resulted from its having been originally laid down by a sailing vessel.
