Ah odd case of petty fraud, which nevertheless might bring heavy loss upon! other holders of bills, has come out. -It seems that an English merchant trading with Calcutta took the trouble to. forge the policies of insurance which he; deposited with a bank when lodging lnV bills drawn against goods shipped. The vessel was wrecked and the goods lost, upon which the -bank claimed on the amount supposed to be insured, but was then informed that the policy was a forgery. The perpetrator has absconded, having previously been found to have falsified the invoices .against which he dremghjg^bills. The forgery of marine ini^^e' policies attracts attention, as ■ ; BJnnpprobably the firsfecase of the kind fraud lies in the small gain to the forger. The personal character of the customers of banks is a general safeguard against such tricks.— London Daily Neivs.
