London, December 3. A rumor has been circulated to the effect that Mr Gorst is te succeed Sir H. C. Lopes, as Judge of the Queen's Bench, the latter succeeding Sir R. Baggallay as one of the Lord Justices of Appeal. Mr. Gorßb has denied the rumor as far as it applies to himself. In the sculling match between Courtn?,y and Edgecumde, the latter was defeated. The Standard, in commenting on the action of the War Office in refusing to allow Major Downes to draw half pay while in the employ of the Victorian Government, urges the abolition of such I an absolute regulation. ! The grazing counties have chiefly re turned Liberal members. The ParHel" lites are carrying most of the LiberalConservative seats in Ireland. Lord John Manners, Postmaster-General, has been elected, and the Hon. Sidney Herbert rejected. It is proposed to organise a committee of merchants and shipowners in opposition to the Australian shipping ring. Mr Stephen Mason, the Liberal candi date, has been elected for Mid- Lanark. Mr Richard Lalor, Home Ruler, for Queen's County, and Sir Matthew Ridley, have been defeated. i December 4. Mr William Spronton Came has been defeated. Mr Gladstone considers that an alliance between the Conservatives and the moderate Liberals is impossible. The captain of the Orient steamer John Elder denies that his vessel had a narrow escape from going on the rocks at Ushant on Sunday last. The Standard states that the chance of the Conservatives obtaining a majority is hopeless. King Theebaw is proceeding to Calcutta. December 5. Mr Pearce has been elected for Go van, and Sir William Dyke has been returned for Dartford. December 6. The Liberals have secured 206 seats in England, 25 in Wales, 58 in Scotland, and 1 in Ireland. The Conservatives have obtained 214 in England, 3 in Wales, 9 in Scotland, and 17 in Ireland.
