MR MENTEATR AT NO TOWN.
[prom our correspondent.] As Mr Menteath's speech to the Brunconstituency has appeared already s^i your columns, and, as a repetition ?-* -would serve no purposes; I shall confine my remarks to the reception he received here on Thursday evening, which was preeminently cordial and enthusiastic. The meeting took, place at, the Good Templars Hall, and almost every one in the district availed himself of the opportunity of hearing our representative narrate the history of last session, -v . Mr J, M. Clifford was voted to the chair, who, in assuming the position of chairman, stated that it afforded him a greater degree of pleasure to preside at this meetiug than at any convened by former members of the House of Representatives for the district. On ?i3us~ -account he would ask the meeting to accord Mm a hearty and cordial reception, and in conclusion he had much pleasure in introducing their representative. Mr Menteath gave an exhaustive "account of all the events of the late session, and was frequently applauded. Ber >;&re resuming his seat, Mr Menteath > informed the meeting of his intention to leave the Coast to reside in Wellington. jL He first- came before them and was elected Ektheir representative as a local man, but Wpovr that he was leaving the district he j^ffelt it to be right and proper that they |r should say .whether or not he ought to i&resign. ' . *■ Mr Low asked what constituted the ;._■ qualification necessary for voting for members of local bodies, and instanced what took place at the last County election at Nelson Creek. Mr Menteath read the Amendment Act ©f last session referring to the same. No other questions being asked, the . Clhairman announced that it was competent for anyone to make any proposition fie thought proper in respect to the member for the Inangahua, whereupon Mr DuncanuCdrbett proposed a renewal of the vote of-confidence in Mr Menteath. Mr J. Livingstone said he had much pleasure in seconding the motion. He admired the candid and straightforward manner in wj&ch Mr Menteath expressed his willingness to resign in consequence of his severing his connexion- with the .district. He fully endorsed what the ©hajrman had said, that in Mr Menteath they had the ablest, member that ever re|rjesented.:the Grey Valley, and it was the "wiali of thcl,^meeting that he should continue to represent them till the expiration of his term of office, and should he visit them they would see what they could do for him. ??Ie motion, was. then put and carried unanimously, amidst deafening applause. " Mr Parfitt then called for three cheers foir Mr Menteath, which was heartily rejaponded to, and acknowledged in suitable terms. •$-. , , . •A cordial yote of thanks id the chair brought the' meeting to a close. Mr Menteath addressed a meeting of the residents of Red Jack's on Friday at nobntattFrankpitt's store. He wasaccorded a hearty reception, and received a vote of confidence.
