FIRES.
Napier, December 1. A building, formerly a hotel known as Smith's Hotel, at Makaraka, was destroyed by fire last night. A woman and some children who were occupying the premises escaped in their night clothes, saving nothing. The cause" is unknown. The bush was on fire in the vicinity during the day, but the fire was not continuous. The building was insured for .£3OO in the New Zealand, and reinsured for £150 in the North British. At Wallingford, on Friuay, a fiyeroomed empty house was found by some passers-by to be burned to the ground. The insurance was £150 in the Standard.
