A J.P. WANTED.

[to the editor/] • Sir,— When the present Government came into office they seemed to. be suddenly seized with a kind of mania for the appointment of J.P's , and they appointed them apparently for political purposes or mere popularity, while ignoring districts where a J.P. was most urgently required for the benefit of the public at large. Some time back a requisition was signed by a number of respectable and influential residents of. Barry town, praying that a resident J.P. might be appointed for that place. The requisition was sent to Government through Major Keddell ; but as yet no reply has been received, which looks like another instance of that departmental neglect,, of which Barrytown certainly receives its full share. Now, sir, much inconvenience is often felt here for the want of a J. P. ,It was only the other day that a man of very limited means had to journey" to "Greymouth for the simple purpose of swearing an affidavit, and this is not the only case. A journey of some 40 miles might have been saved if we had a J.P. in our midst ; and as this is not a case of pounds, shillings and pence, I think' the Government might grant us this one consideration. : If this case had been properly represented to our member before he went to Wellington, I have no doubt he would have endeavored to have ; the want supplied. As it is, he should use his influence to get the wishes of the .community in this matter granted. Many other arguments might be advanced in support of the proposition, but I am afraid I have taken up too much of. your space already.-— I am, &c, i -•. Finnigan's Mate.
