NEW VESSELS BUILT.
Lloyd's Register of Shipping, under date of January 8, 1885, gives the following account account of new vessels during the year 1884 :— United : jKinpdom. — Seventy-three steel ateam vessels, of 112,288 tons gross, and 13 steel sailing vessels, of 12,376 tons gross ; 376 iron steam vessels, of 484,109 tons gross, and 92 iron sailing' vessels, of 137,341 tons gross ; 14 wooden steam vessels, of 1074 tons gross, and 85 wooden sailing vessels, of 7465 tons gross :— the total vessels built being 653, with a gross total of 754,653 tons In the colonies no iron vessels were constructed, and only 12 wooden vessels, of 5132 tons gross register. The United States built 1 steel steam vessel, of 745 tonß gross, 1 iron steam vessel, of 3119 tons gross ; and 1 iron Bailing vessel, of 1999 tons gross : — the total being 3 vessels of 5863 tons gross. Germany built 3 steam vessels of steel, with a tonnage of 4277 tons gross ; 6 iron steam vessels, of 4372 tons gross ; 4 iron sailing vessels, of 4299 tons gross ; and 5 wooden sailing vessels, of 379 tons ' toss: — the total being 18 vessels, of 13,327 tons gross. Italy constructed 2 iron steam vessels, of 483 tons gross, and 1 iron sailing vessel, of 103 tons ; making a total of 3 vessels, of 586 tons gross. Holland built 1 steel steam vessel, of 1105 tons gross ; and 19 iron steam vessels, of 14,689 tons gross -.—total 20 vessels, of 15 794 tons gross. j Denmark is credited with 2 iron steam vessels, of 2020 tons gross, Norway built 9 iron steam vessels, of 7484 tons gross. Sweden built 1 steam vessel of Rteel, of 1666 tons gross ; and 2 steam vessels of iron, of 1183 tons :— making a total of 3 vessels, of 2849 tons. The total number of vessels built in the several countries during the year amouuted to 723 of all classes, o f 807,708 tons gross. Summarising these, we find that 92 steel vessels were built, of which 79 were steamers, with a total of 120,081 tons gross, and 13 sailing vessels, of 12,376 tons gross, making a grand total of 132,457 tons register. The iron steam vessels amount to 417, of 517,459 tons, and the sailing vessels to 98. of 143,742 tons gross, making a total of 661,201 tons. There were 14 wooden steam vessels built with 1074 tons gross, and 102 sailing vessel, of 12,976 tons, making a total of 14,050 tons register.
