In compliance with a requisition, his Worship the Mayor requests the 'citizens to observe Monday, 28th inst., as a public holiday from 1 to 6 p;m., and the requisionists have agreed to close their ' places of business during the above hours, so as to allow the employees to see the race for the championship of the West Coast between O'Loughlin and Hunt, A meeting of the Debating Club was held last evening in the Town Hall. . A full muster of members were present, and also a number of ladies graced the meeting by their presence. Rev. Mr Maclean was in the chair. The subject of debate ■vas— " Has Scotland produced greater benefits to cheworld than England." The debate was opened in the affirmative by the Rev. Mr Westbrooke, followed in the negative by the President. Messrs Thornton, Boase, Malcolm, Petrie, Helms, C. Smith, and Matheson spoke, some for the affirmative, and others for the negative ; after which the opener replied, and on the vote being taken it was found that England had gained the debate by three votes. Altogether it was a very enjoyable evening. Next night will be devoted to readings and recitations.
