ROWING ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL.
The Oxford crew started from Dover at 15 minutes after 10 o'clock on July 25 to row across the Channel to Calais. The weather at the time of the start was fine, and them was a dead calm. The crew expected to reach Calais at two o'clock in the afternoon. A great crowd of persons witnessed the starting of the, boat. At 30 minutes after 10 the boat was one mile out, but at a quarter to 11 it was making slow^progress, as the tide was causing it to drift eastward. The boat arrived at Calais * y at 18 minutes to 3 p.m. Oxford maintained an average of 32 strokes to the minute. ;.., Upon their arrival at Calais the municipal authorities met them, and offered them wine and lunch. The crew returned to Dover in a tug.
