PARLIAMENTARY.

[FROM OtJR CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, [September 19. In the House of Representatives this day the ■ amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill were agreed to. Mr J. C. Buckland said the Government had promised to appoint Dr Haast Commissioner of New Zealand ; of the Colonial Exhibition, and he saw by the papers that it was now intended to appoint Dr Buller. The Premier said the Treasurer had stated that Dr Von Haast would be the only; paid Commissioner Mr J. C Buckland moved the adjourn^ ment of the House, and said he understood that the Treasurer had given the House to understand that Dr Buller would not be appointed Commissioner, and an answer was given by the Premier that morning that was utterly unworthy of the head of Government of this colony. Mr ,W. J. Buckland said Dr Buller had a point blank commission to square the native vote for the Government, and he could produce witnesses to prove that the Government were kept in office by promising a commission to a gentleman to go home. The speaker said hon. [ gentlemen would see the impropriety of usins: such language. Mr- Te Ao denied | the assertion of Mr Buckland that Dr Buller had tried to influence the native | vote, and said the natives had entirely voted of their own free will. Mr O'Conor said it would be unworthy of the liouse to take notice of the member for Franklyn north. Mr Hursthpuse asked whether the Premier would state if a second commissioner would be paid. Sir G. Grey created great laughter by asserting that no man was better disposed towards his fellowmen than the member for Franklyn north Mr W. F. Buckland " A voice — take a vote on it ; " (Laughter), Sir G Grey said he would not agree that ' Mr Kerr proceeded to "go" for Mr G. F. Buckland, when that gentleman hastily picked up his hat and left the chamber. Mr Seddon said the position of the House was like that of a party of diggers who had a poor washing up. When they had a good washing up they were all jolly* 8 good fellows, but when they had a bad washing up they all grumbled at each other. Mr Turnbull said the discussion was lowering the House, and showed that it was time they dissolved. The Premier, in answer to a question on 4th of September said that the. only paid commisioner there was to be Dr V. Haast. And he said so now. It was decided if anyone else went Home he would have to pay his own expenses. Dr Hector had been recommended by Dr Haast. The matter here dropped and the House went into Committee of Supply. Mr Hursthouse asked if the Chairman could not adjourn the Committee for lunch. The Chairman replied in the negative, Mr Hursthouse.— "Does the hon the Premier wish to keep us on starvation rations?" The Premier — " The hon. Gentleman will see that this is a comrnit+ee of Supply." (Laughter). It was then decided to adjourn till 2 p.m.
