ARRIVAL OF S.S. TONGARIO.
Port Chalmers, September 16. The s.s. Tongariro arrived at 10.15 p.m. yesterday after a passage of 45 days, actual steaming time 42 days four hours three minutes. She left Plymouth at 2.55 p.m on the Ist August with 382 passengers and 251 bags mails ; at 6.34 p.m. on the 7th discovered that main shaft, No. 4 bearing, was badly broken ; stopped the engines and set canvas ; after a delay of 10 hours one cf Thomson's patent couplings was fitted and the vessel again put under steam at three-quarter Bpeed, and gradually increased to full Bpeed, the couplings -working admirably ; reached, Capetown at 4.40 a.m., 22nd August, and took on board four bags of mails and three passengers, leaving again at 5.25 p.m. on the 23rd ; had fresh to moderate westerlies ; passed Cape Leuwin at 4 a.m. on the Bth instant; and anchored at the Heads at 10.45 p.m. The Tongariro brings 650 tons of cargo for Dunedin. 458 for Lyttelton, 778 for Wellington, 657 for Auckland. No births or deaths took place. Among the passengers there are 150 nominated immigrants, principally for northern ports.
