THE EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.
Tne Protection Association to-night passed a resolution approving the Colonial Treasurer's proposals re the West Coast I railway. Similar resolutions were passed at a meeting held at Sydenham to-night. At the latter a motion was carried requestSir George-Grey to support the petitions in favor of the railway, a3 being in accord with his own teaching. 7,700 signatures have been obtained to the petition in favor of the railway and forwarded from Christchurch. Christchurch, July 29. The Mayor of Christchurch received telegrams to-day from Sir Julius Yogel and Messrs Rolleston and Wakefield, replying to the resolutions of the public I meeting at the City Council on Monday last re East and West Coast railway. Mr Wakefield says, inter alia, " I am grieved and ashamed at the reckless disregard of the public welfare which 4s shown at Christchurch for the sole object of getting an immediate expenditure of money." The Mayor telegraphed back, " Surprised you consider proposals profligate, when, unless misreported, you proposed a similar, scheme in a speech to your constituents in July, 1884."
