EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.

The member's of the Borough Council held ah emergency meeting yesterday evening to consider what steps should be taken by them^as a body in regard E to the East and 1 West -Coast? railway. 1 All the members were present with the exception of Messrs Grifien and Coates. ' •■■ '■'■

His Worship the Mayor moved the fol-' lowing resolution, which was carried unanimously ' :~* ' That ? tiiis ; Council expressess its entire concurrence with the proposals of the Government re construction of East and West Coast Railway, as In* their,, opinion it ; will •, be |the > means Jof 'settling a. large population on land hitherto inaccessible, besides opening up vast tracts of country rich in gold, silver,; coal, iron, and other valuable .minerals, and that the above be telegraphed to the Government, and ' the West Coast members in both Houses of the General. Assembly."

Cr.Shepdy moved— "That , a , telegram be'seht to Sir George Grey, X.C 8., requesting his assistance in getting the proposals of the Government with reference to the East and West Coast Railway carried into effect, upon "the grounds that Sir George Grey has always expressed a strong desire, to be of service to the town of Greymoutii (named after him) whenever it should lay in his.power, and that the present is an. opportunity whiclv may not occur again for many years to come, and inasmuch as the proposed railways are of vast importance to the West Coastin general but more especially to Greymouth." This also was carried unanimously. The Council then adjourned.
