BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening at 8 o'clock. Present — His Worship the Mayor (chair), Crs Walton, Sheedy, Cameron, Coates, Lah- ' man, Blackmore, Perotti, and Griffen. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. Letter in reference to the Swimming Club for a payment in arrear. — Or Sheedy said that the fence had not been erected in a proper manner as stipulated for, and ihe moved tbab they should retain the balance due to the club until such time as they complied with the conditiods that had been entered into. — Cr Lahman seconded. — Carried. Letter from F. W. Martin, Resident Engineer, notifying that only 75 per cent would be paid to the contractor for the Cobden bridge. — Received. Resolved that Mr Martin be requested "to report fortnightly as to the progress of the work. A letter was received from Mr John Quinlan, inspector of nuisances, resigning his position, and a committee ; was appointed to define the duties of the inspector and call for applications for the office. . , . • . The Chairman of the Public Works Committee read the following report: — " Your Committee beg to submit the following estimate of amounts required to be provided for the year 1885, and for which a general rate should be made and levied. General streets, roads, and foot- J ways, reinstating repairs and maintenance £1000 Subsidy to Fire Brigade (£SO), Engine keeping and night watching (£7B) .; 128 Lighting streets, roads, and bridges ...^ 250 Subsidy to" Greymouth Literary Society 50 £1428 Ateo, that the funds available for the above purposes are nil. " Your Committee beg to report that the manager of the National Bank hasj agreed to pay the sum of twenty-five pounds towards the cost of building a retaining wall in front of the buildings known as Kettle's buildings, in Tainui street, and that the work of constructing the wall has been let for the sum of twenty pounds (labor only), the Council finding all material. " Your Committe have given instructions to have specifications prepared for the strengthening of one of the bridges on Marsden Road, and to have the culverts repaired where required by day labor. The Mayor gave notice to introduce a motion for levying a rate of one shilling in the pound for the time being. The appointment of Mr R. J. Johnston, as inspector of works under Mr Martin for Cobden brige was carried. Mr Lord's report in respect to water supply was reac 1 and received. The Council then adjourned.
