THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, JULY 23, 1885.

The annual meeting of the Greymouth Benevolent Society was held on Tuesday evening at the Town Hall. Present — Messrs James Kerr (chair), J. G. Thomas, P. B. Cameron, W. C. Smith, J. J. Blackmore R. Kettle, Rev. Mr Maclean, J. Petrie, A. L; Bristow, J. Courtenay Smith, M. Reardon, J. A. Whall, R. King, H. West, and J. M'Gregor. The minutes of the last year's annual meeting were read and confirmed. The hon. treasurer read the audited annual statement of accounts for the past year. Mr M'Gregor moved that the statement of accounts be received and adoptedt —Carried. Mr Petrie moved

that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the officers of the society. Seconded by the Rev. Mr Maclean.— Carried. Rev. Mr Maclean drew attention to the fact that the ordinary meetings being held on Wednesday evening prevented the regular exofficio members from attending all the meetings they should attend the same, 'night. "Votes of thanks were passeed to the auditors, the treasurer, "the secretary, for their services during the past year. Mr Bristow moved that Mr F; W. Lahman and W. B. Barkley be appointed auditors. Seconded by Mr Mr .Blackmore and carried. The election for. the managing committee for the ensuing year was taken, which resulted in •; the following gentlemen being re-turned;-^Messrs Kerr, Thomas, Blackmore, W. C. Smith, and Bristow. This concluded the business of the meeting. The first meeting of the newly-elected Hospital Committee was held at Gilmer's Hotel last evening, there being present — Messrs Thomas (chair), Lahinan, Matheson, Kent, Cameron, Tonks, Hogg, Yarrall, Lord, Arnott, Blackmore, Dupre, Petrie. i The Returning Officer, Mr Payne ; forwarded the list of members elected, which was read and adopted. Messrs J. Arnott and F. Lahman were respectively reappointed hon. secretary and hon. trea- ! surer,' for which both gentlemen thanked the committee for the confidence reposed in them. Ths inward correspondence haying been dealt with, the resignation of R. Mann as cook on account of illness was accepted, and applications ordered to be invited for the situation. The Visiting Committee reported 33 patients in the Hospital, and everything progressing satisfactorily. The hon. treasurer reported following receipts — East Ward, 2nd subscription, Lll 9s 6d; West Ward, 2nd subscription, Ls4s ; G. Perotti, LI ; T. Funston, 10s ; Calders, LI ; Harle, ss ; J. Petrie, LI Is ;J. O'Brien, 10s ; J. Mitchell, LI 1? ; J. Walton, LI ; J. J. Blackmore, LI Is ; T. W. Wilson, LI Is ; amount received at election by Returning Officer, Ll6 14s. Messrs Yarrall, Cameron, and Blackmore were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month. Supplies for the ensuing six months were ordered to be advertised for, tenders to be considered at a special meeting to be held on Tnursday next at 8 p.m. Our Brunnerton correspondent notified us yesterday afternoon that Mr George Redmayne had received the following telegram from G. A. Ansell, at 3 p.m. this (Wednesday) afternoon: — Mr Ballance has referred the question to law officers for the opinion of the Cabinet. The meeting to-day sent information in respect to the bridge question that they interested Captain Williams in favor of the Rocky Island route for a bridge. — The tender of Mr Fraser for fixing the boilers and other work at Wallsend mine has been accepted. Mr Harrison received a telegram on Tuesday instructing him to commence sinking the Wallsend mine shaft at once. A gang of men was put to work yesterday to clear up the shaft. A post office has been established at Dobson. A tri- weekly mail will be despatched per Reefton coach, commencing on Monday, the 28th inst. Mr Courtenay Smith has been appointed postmaster. The s.s. Napier wasjs.ubmitted to auction at Wellington on the 17fch inst., by Mr T. K. Macdonald, and knocked down to Mr W. H. Levin, the mortgagee, for the sum of £1100.
