NELSON CREEK MATTERS.

[TO .; THE EDITOR.] Sir, — It is hardly fair to critise in one paper what one reads in another. : However, on this occasion I hope I may be excused. In the evening paper of the 16th inst I noticed a letter from a: Nelson Creek correspondent (J. M. Morris). It is such a mixed up affair that it is not easy to understand it. He commences by describing the late accident,/ and goes on to say that he commented on/the road, arid for 18 months agb/ ; Yes, He did J because Mr Robert Potts was the manfcenance contractor, ;and Mr Morris , is not friendly with him. ThiSuWas his reason for doing so. Every brie here knows that the road then

was in a better condition than ever it was , ; before or has been since, Mr Morris finishes his letter by this most extraordinary statement. "Of course it is the ' ratepayers of Nelson Creek, not the: \ county as a whole, that is to blame for this state of things. Time will tell how many more lives -ara "to be "'' lost- .before they will send a representative to the council able and ■•^ling^iJip-SEhold-thett/mterMt;^ that body. As things stand, there is no use complaining. Our present representative dare not movennithe'matter- of 'changing - the route of the road, as that would put the traffic out- of the road of a certain house, and, for such a" petty consideration / we must put : up.:, with losing a good citizen." What ..malicious and corir temptible statements ! They are not woithy of the lowest person in the district. First, the proprietor of thw house always wanted the south road made; arid well does the writer know this. The first thing Mr Parfitt moved for was to have a road or a- bridge to Hatters. All this contemptible bickering is because the electors did not choose him in place of Mr Parfitt.: ' The electors may feel satisfied that they chosen an honeat man as ; their member,, arid a man they need not be ashamed of ;. and I venture to say that there is not one elector in the district who would care to be seen walking down Mawhera Quay in broad daylight in company • with the Nelson Creet correspondent referred to. No one can deny that Mr Parfitt is. trying to do his best for the district, anditisto.be hoped he will be successful' in getting rthe south? road made, for. it is really wanted. /I may say that people here are, disßatisfied with the rider censuririg the Councillors for not making a road to Hatters Terrace. No one. knew better than ;the foreman of the jury that the blame shoujd.be put on. some of the residents of Try-Again and Hatters. , The people were always divided on this vexed question. While Mf-.Davicl Madden was a member he was besieged with communications from Try-Again men in business there, to use all his influence to stop the south road. There were also meetings held in Hatters about this road, and they carriedta vote against it. How then, in the face of all this can the Council be censured when they carried out the wishes of the people? Even now I do not think- that 'the' people are for the south road, and the Council should give it their favorable consideration. I think this is enough to show that the rider censuring the Council was ill-considered, and that it should censure some of the residents, as the foreman well knew, — I am, &c, '• ■■'•'•- '■ ( /•{ •.-•■ - : ■ '.
