HERALD MINING REPORTS.
Reepton, January 23. Inglewood. —The sinking of the main shaft below the present level is proceeding with satisfactory despatch, but the country during the last few days has become slightly harder. In the upper portion of the mine ground is now being got ready for another term of crushing operations. The mill is not likely to be started for a week, as the supply of water is limited. Golden Treasure.— Procuring stone from the south ot main tunnel is the only work now going forward. There is a scarcity of water at this Company's battery, therefore reducing stone here will not be resumed till after a downfall of rain. Phoenix. — Are following the run of quartz known as the black reef. The quartz taken from this reef in former days gave good yields. The stone coming to the surface is similar in character to that previously obtained, but is so dark as to make it impossible for anyone to form an idea as to its value. It is thought to be as payable as any yet taken from the lode. . Energetic— Good despatch is being made by the contractors for the construction of tunuel a distance of 200 ft. On reaching that spot the western reef is expected to be cut. The upper portion of this lode gave about 7dwts of gold per ton of quartz. The width of the lode is from 4 to Bft., therefore it will be seen that the company's stampers (30), which are in a good state of preservation, will in all likelihood be remuneratively employed in the course of say a couple of months. Wealth of Nations.— The value of the new find is shortly to-be tried, as arrangements have been made to start crushing at the company's battery at an early date. Keep-it-Dark.— The show of amalgam on the plates during the week has been of a very encouraging character. This information has a more than ordinary value, owing to the fact that the major portion of the ore crushed this week has come from the north portion of the lode in the lower level where the reef is of an unusual size.
Globe. — The company are pushing on with the erection of the trestles in connexion with the endless rope. This system for transmitting, power at a great distance has been in vogue for many years past in all parts of the world. It therefore follows that the scheme will be a success here, as the company have a superabundance of water to work the machinery. All attention is concentrated in urging on the completion of tKe main shaft, at which the endless rope above alluded to is to be employed for winding purposes. If all goes well the company should be actively engaged crushing Btone about April next.
