SPECULATION AND COMPENSATION.
[to the editor. 1
g IR) — It appears that Roche and party are persistent in their efforts to obtain compensation for the water hole they have dug in the bed of Nelson Creek. "N ow, near this present /water hole a parly of Chinese sunk: another hole a little over 12 -Months 'ago. The Chinese found out the best arid 1 easiest way to work the ground. They tried it and left it ; of course it would not pay them. Now, Roche, and party have already received very fair consideration, and that is free water for a length of time in order to ■'blow up this water hole. Roche and • party have, according to a statement made by them to the Warden at Nelson Creek. r 'been taken in hand by the Gold-fields Committee ; and the general Government is going to cancel the rights of the Band of Hojie Company for the purpose of compensating Roche and Co. ; but Roach and Co. are not satisfied. They want the public, according to their own showing, to pay for their unsuccessful litigation, or what not. They want the county to assist them with* means. Tfliat for if not to harrass neighbours, and compensate them - r for their wild 'speculations? The County Council is not, I think, that rich in funds that it can afford to vote money for such ipurposes. There are legitimate demands for tracks made through the columns of the Argus every week. Let me point out to you, Mr Editor, ! the immense outlay and indefatigable exertions of the Band of Hope Company. Yet they have, received nothing more that .the assistance of a surveyor for a few days to level their- race. Have they not some claim for consideration? . Then again there is Mr Benjamin Gough, who has received not one tittle of the free water obtained by Roche and Company, out of the Government race, and yet this man has, alone and unaided, extended the Government water race nearly a mile and a half in length,. at his own cost, to a comparatively new. and untried part of the district. Has Mr Gough gone , to. the Council begging ,. for -..the scraps ? No; and notwithstanding that he will have been the direct means of materially increasing the revenue from the Govern- . ment race, and as a ; consequence the county: funds in the shape of duty and other impositions. ' Let the County Council but . once commence to lavish its funds in the encouragement of profitless miniug'speculations such / as the one referred to, and there will be no end to the demands.— l am, &c, Miner.
