An accident which might have been .attended with serious consequences happened on the Kumara tramway yesterday. When the car, which leaves the latter place at noon, had got to within about half a mile of the Teremakau, a newly laid rail was passed, causing the car to press ra-her heavily on the opposite old rail, which was ragged and had a deep crack in it, into which one of the forewheel's ran in such a way as to make the car leave the track. The sudden jerk caused the driver and two passengers sitting beside him to be pitched headlong into the mud close by, but fortunately without receiving serious injury. The driver stuck to the rails, while one of the passengers ran to the horse's head, just in time to prevent further mischief, and had the embankment been a high one, nothing could have prevented a complete capsize. This would have been very awkward foi the only inside passenger, who was on his way to the hospital with a bad leg. Aftei about two hours hard work the driver and passengers succeeded in replacing the car on the line.
