THE REMOVAL OF THE DREDGE,

The following telegrams in relation to the proposed removal of the dredge were received by his Worship the Mayor yesterday :— "Wellington, this day, 10.49 a.m. " His Worship the Mayor,

" I saw Minister early this morning at his private house, and again a few minutes ago. Blair wired to engineer there, and if he corroborates the fact that a vessel grounded, and that the dredge is required there, I have the distinct promise from the Minister for Public Works that the dredge shall remain ; and what is better still, same shall be put to work in the river there without delay. As soon as the' answer from the engineer arrives I shall wire again. H. H. Lahman." " Hokitika, this day, 1.54 p.m. " His Worship the Mayor, "Immediately upon receipt of your telegram last night I telegraphed Preniier, asking do nothing until my arrival in Wellington, and have just received following reply : — ' My colleague the 'Minister ' of Public Works has given orders to delay matter meantime.' A. R. Guinness." [prom a correspondent.] Hokitika, September 15. Immediately on the receipt of a telegram from the Mayor of Greymouth last night, Mr Guinness sent the following telegram to the Premier : — "Trust Government will not permit dredge, which was originally purchased for Greymouth harbor works, to be removed to Westport, especially as same is urgently required at Greymouth for immediate use. I can from personal observation on Sunday last endorse contents of telegram from Mayor of Greymouth to Hon. Minister of Public Works. I would ask that action be deferred until my reuurn to Wellington at end of present week. Please reply.

To-day at noon the following reply was received by Mr Guinness at Hokitika, and communicated to Mr Dupre : —

" My colleague, the Minister of Public Works, has given orders to delay the matter in the meantime. — Robert Stout."
