i ( HERALD MINING REPORTER.) Reefton, January 25. Keep-it-Dark. — A large number of men are employed enlarging and cleaning out the water-race. At present this is the i chief work going forward, and during its operation the stampers are hung up. j Wealth of Nations. — The construction of a tunnel is shortly to be taken in hand at a considerable greater depth than any work-* yet performed by the company. ! The company are fully justified by past results in further proving their ground. The company started working their mine j in the year i.872, and during the following year they crushed 4410 tons of quartz; and kept the mill in constant employment until the year 1880, and a small crushiugs have taken place at intervals since. Dur- ; ing the time that the crushing operations j were going on- the gold product was i 27,5820z, and the amount of dividends j declared to have been £35,100, i Inglewood and Phcenix Battery.—Rei garding the time that this mill is expected ! to be ready for a commencement to crush, l the foreman in charge jf the work for the j contractors thinks that about a month i should do it. The whole of the machinery Jis now on the ground. The several con- [ tracts such as trains, paddocks, and shsots j are progressing favorably. I Inglewood — Still driving on reef northI wards. A few days back the reef took a different course more to the west, and in going for it a new splice of reef was found. The charac er of the latter addition is reported to improve the value «>£ the property. Phoenix—The contract f=>r driving ;n intermediate level is now about finished.
During the driving a moderate width of reef has been maintained in the face. The stone procured in these operations when brought to the surface exhibited payable prospects.
