CRIMINAL STATISTICS.
A return of the number of criminal cases dealt with at the R.M. Court during the past year shows that 1363 males and 268 females were either summoned or taken into custody on various charges. Of these 254 males and 46 females were discharged for want of evidence. The following shows the number of cases under the different headings : — Dismissed on their merits, 03 males and 5 females; committed for trial, 31 males and 5 females ; summarily convicted, 1015 males and 212 females; fined, 596 males and 5S females; imprisoned in lieu of fine, 267 males and 84 females ; peremptory punishment, 127 males and 45 females ; whipping, 3 males bound over to. keep the peace, 9 males and 3 females ; orders made, 73 males and 22 females; amongst 1631 cases disposed of there were 436 of drunkenness; 262 under city bye-laws; 174 vagrancy; 94 larceny; 73 common assault ; 45 wilful damage to property; 65 under Shipping and Seamen's Act ; 69 under the Dog Registration Act ; and 42 under the Licensing Act.
