Wellington; January 3. The first meeting of the Oouncil of the Educational Institute of New Zealand was ; held this morning, the following members being presents-Messrs . Di White and R. Peattie, Otago ; J. G. Scott and G. Hogden, Christchurch ; W> Ward, South Canterbury ; J. Young, Wellington ;; and H. Worthington, Auckland. . : Mr Worthington was voted .to the chair, and on the motion of ,Mr Hogden it was decided that visitors should be admitted to the meeting, of the Council .and allowed to .speak. but not to vote. The following associates of the Council then took their seats at the table : — Messrs Watson and Cole, Wellington ; T. S. Foster, J. Baldwin, and thx* Rev. T. Flavell, Christchurch.r The Council then proceeded to consider the rules adopted.last year, and after considerable discussion it was decided on the motion of Mr.D. -White, that 'the New 'Zealand Educational Institute ; should' consist of the branches in Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, : Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. Rule 2— (That -the object of the Institute shall be the promotion of the interests of education within the colony of New Zealand) was passed as printed, as was also Rule 3— i That the General Council of the Institute shall consist of members elected by local associations. 'Rule 4 was altered so as to read as follows :— " That" each" assbciation'sliall be entitled to one representative for the first 20 members, and. one for every additional 30 names beyond the first 20 on the roll of membership. Mr H. Worthington was elected president 1 for the ensuing year, arid Mr D. White (Otago) was elected secretary, and Mr J. G. Scott (Christchurch), treasurer. On the motion of the president, the Council decided that next meeting should be held at Auckland, on the 6th of January, 1885.' ..... . ,
