j (Received May 23, 0.45 a.m.) ARRIVAL OF THE JOHN ELDER, | Melbourne, May 22. Arrived, this evening, the Orient steamship John Elder, from Plymouth, April i 7. I HURRICANE AND EARTHQUAKE I AT SAMOA. j News was received here that a destrucI tive hurricane and earthquake occurred at Samoa on March 24th. (sic.) Many vessels were totally wrecked, and two deaths occurred from drawing. (Received May 21, 2.45 p.m.) STICKING TO STEAM TRAMWAYS. Sydney, May 21. j Government have decided not to stop , running the steam tramways pending parliamentary action in the matter. A bill has been prepared to legalise the use of steam motors.
