FIRE AT FOXTON.
Foxton, December 19. A serious fire occurred here at one this morning, when Mr T P Williams' store was burned to the ground and all the stock destroyed. The stock was valued at over L2OOO. The building was a very old one and was insured for L 250. The origin of the fire is a complete mystery. George Williams, the proprietor's brother, sleeps on the premises, and when he retired at 31 last night everything wa3 safe. The fire was no sooner observed than the whole building was a mass of flames, preventing anyone approaching it. Only a few pounds of tobacco were saved. The Primitve Methodist Church on the north side, and the old Custom House on the south side were saved with difficulty, there being fortunately no wind at the time. The correct insurances are — South British, LSOO, and National L 1250, of which LSOO is reinsured in the Scottish and Imperial and L 250 in the United, making the nett loss of the National Company LSOO.
