Gambetta has been compelled to have one of his fore fingers amputated in conconsequence of the recent accident. Government have decided ou granting a general gratutity to the Irish Constabulary as some recognition of their faithful services under very trying circumstances. The Italian (Joverument are making some important changes in the military organisation r>f the Kingdom. It is intended to increase the deficiency of the national militia by insisting on the various batallions being more frequently called out, and for longer periods, for drill and manteuvtea.
The people of Manchester are unanimous in the determination to persevere with the scheme for constructing a ship canal to connect that city with the river Mersey, their object being to secure the advantage of direct communication with-* out, as at present, having to receive and send their goods via Liverpool. It has beeen decided that the colonial banks having head offices in London must collect income tax deposits from their customers. At a fire at the Alhambra Theatre several firemen engaged in extinguishing the flames were killed by the falling of burning material. The Prussian Chamber of Deputies have voted a sum of 1,000,000 marks towards a fund formed for the relief of sufferers by the inundations. December 14. The Right Hon Hugh Childers resigns the Secretaryship of War to accept the Chancellorship of the Exchequer. Bishop Kennion has sailed for Adelaide to"day. The overland passenger route through Egypt will be resumed at the end of December. December 15. Serious dissensions are reported to have occurred in the French Cabinet regarding the Tonquin expedition. A placard has been posted about the city of Stamboul, denouncing the Sultan as a madman, and urging his deposition and a change of dynasty. The Committee of Congress in America has proposed to grant large ship building bounties. The fire at Kingston, Jamaica, is supposed to have been the work of an ins cendiary. The loss is estimated at three millions. December 16, Five hundred of those who are said to have been implicated in the massacre at Alexandria nav e been discharged. Lerranon'a opposition to Sagasta has collapsed. December 17. A brother of the Higgina' family has been found guilty and sentenced to death for the Lough Mask murder. The principal Native chiefs in Dunnsland are stated to ba in favor of the restoration of Cetewayo. The Fenians are threatening to burn down the public buildings in London in revenge for the execution of the Maantrasna murderers. Sir Anthony Musgrove, Governor of Jamacia, is soliciting relief in England for snfferers by the Kingston fire. An extensive police raid has been made on the places of meeting of secret societies in Dublin, but very few discoveries of any importance waa made.
