A MONKEY TO APPEAR AS A WITNESS.
A monkey witness is shortly to appear in a murder trial in an Indian court at Sattara. A travelling Bhowman, whose living depended on five monkeys and a goat, was recently murdered near a village, his troupe being killed with the exception of one monkey, which ran up a tree and watched the asaasin bury his master and companions. When all was quiet, the monkey ran off to the " patel" of the nearest village and made him understand by screeches and signs that something was wrong. The " patel" followed the monkey, which led him to the place where his master was buried, and the murder waß duly discovered. The monkey is now kept for the identification of the assassins, a plan which recalls the timehonored history of the dog of Montargis.
