At a meeting of the Gioymouth Rangers, held at the Volunteer Hall on Wednesday evening, Capta'n Smith laid an effer before the Company for the purchase of the Volunteer Hall. 16 was ultimately resolved to buy the building, the members taking up debentures, Mr J G-. Thomas, late of the Cadets, was u> animously cbosen Lieutenant, Mr W. S. Smith having resigned. There are few Greymouth people who wil. not regret to learn ot the death of Mr J. T FitzGerald, one of the old residents of Grey mouth, having been a hotelkeeper here fo r the last 16 years. Mr FitzGerald had only been ill some three weaks before bis disea-e — congestion of the brain— took a dangerous turn and carried him off. Deceased was cut off in the very prime of life, and, we regret to have to record, leaves a wife and family of five young children— noae too well provided for. Although some short lime ago Mr FitzGerald was what is knowa as " comf jrtably off," fortune took an untoward turn, and he suffered some very severe reverses a faw years since. Deceased had marjy friends, as he was possessed of sterling qualities, and alwajs took a keen interest in every public question affecting the welfare of Greymouth. It will he seen from the report of the proceedings of the Central Board of Education that the removal of the offices fr^m Hokitika to Greymouth has nob only been finally approved of, but the changs has been clinched, as it were, by the purchase of new offices here at a cost of L 650, aDd a cheap bargain the Board has secured if the cost cf purchase is compared with the original cost of the premises, The usual fortnightly meeting of the Greymcuth Literary Club was held last nioht, the Bubject for discussion being " Freetrado v Protection," when after an animated discussion tho debate was adjourned until next meeting,
