Chbistchdrch, June 7. ! The Bench expressed a strong opinion about the manner in which the Riccarton hotel was conducted. A case of gambling recently came before the R.M. Court in which it was shown that a man lost a horse and dray which did not belong to him to one of the proprietors son's. The application for a renewal was adjourned for a fortnightAt the inquest on Birch, a verdict was returned of death from fatty degeneration of the heart, which I)r Irving said, in hi« opinion, was the cause of death. There are 48 candidates for the Education Board scholarships, 27 boys and 21 girls. An inquest was held this morning on the body of a woman who died at Addington in childbirth from excessive hemorrhage. In returning this verdict the jury added a rider censuring the nurse for not calling in medical aid soon enough.
