A COMPLAINT FROM SEVENTEEN MILE.

[to the editor.] Sir,— We have had, and still have, some rather peculiar specimens of humanity here. One of those who have left for pastures new, was an old shoemaker who rejoicsd in the norn de plume of Bismarck, alias Taipo. Daring his periodical sprees, his stentorian voice could be heard at a distance of hundreds < of yards from Barrytown, though his lan- ( guage was by no means refined — in fact, he became a public nuisance ; and though sundry shower-baths, as well as flourdustings, were administered, he was altogether incorrigible. A c last his sban ty was raffled for, and the proceeds enabled him t;o start for Greyraouth rejoicing. It was in this way that we got rid of Bismarck, and the township has had no reason to regret his loss. Having thus introduced the object of my letter, T beg to state that lam the father of a family, and live oa the Beach. We here have a fair, though ancient daughter of Eve who, like Bismarck, also dips rather deeply into alcoholic drinks, and when'she does so, her tongue, (at all times flowing with peculiar volubility), frequently gets beyond the bounds of decency, and, consequently, vulgar and abusive. This evil, being In itself an intolerable nuisance, becomes worse when young children, coming from school, are

involuntarily compelled to listen to this woman's vituperations. Under these circumstances, Sir, I respectfully submit that something should be done by the authorities, to prevent repetitions of such disgraceful exhibitions ; and I would suggest that all the hotelkeepers should receive peremptory instructions not to supply this party with any alcoholic liquors whatever. Hoping that these few remarks may have the desired effect, I am, &c., Pater Familias. Seventeen Mile Beach, March 12, 1881.
